The Curriculum

At South Marston CofE Primary school we passionately believe in a broad and balanced curriculum that is relevant to children growing up in the early 21st Century. We understand that the world in which they live in now will be very different as they move through adulthood.

We follow the latest National Curriculum (2014) but approach it in our own, unique way. South Marston embraces the 'Creative curriculum', classes study a topic or theme into which are entwined many aspects of the National Curriculum. Generally Maths and some aspects of English, such as spelling and grammar are taught as discrete subjects, however if meaningful links can be made to topics then we do so as we believe that children have greater success learning this way.

We teach phonics using the 'Letters and Sounds' resource. Our reading scheme is made up of a number of schemes which have been 'banded' with a specific colour using the 'Book band' system to put them in a progressive order. We believe that it is important that children are exposed to a variety of texts from different publishers.

As a school we think it is very important that all needs are met. Our SENco (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) works closely with pupils, teachers, parents and other agencies to ensure that children with Special Educational Needs have the best possible chance to make progress and achieve. We also have a number of pupils on our Able, Gifted and talented register. On a daily basis class teachers plan to ensure these needs are met, in addition we also run a popular AG&T Maths day and AG&T English day. We act as a hub for other local schools, enabling AG&T children to work in partnership with children from other schools with similar talents.

Children benefit from up-to-date Computing facilities, with the use of laptops, i-pads and the latest interactive whiteboards.

South Marston CofE School has a long history of success with swimming. Past pupils have gone on to compete at a regional and national level. We are lucky to have our own swimming teachers which enables us to provide swimming lessons from Reception up to Y6, something very unique to us. We also have considerable success with sport in general, our football and netball teams having a great deal of success competing against large Swindon schools. Music is also a growing strength, every child in KS2 has the opportunity to learn an instrument, with Y3/4 children learning the recorder, leading to the clarinet in Y5/6. The Swindon Music service lend each child in Y5/6 a clarinet during their time with us. Our school choir also takes part in local and regional events. Music plays an important part in our Harvest, Christmas & Easter church services as well as the infamous Summer concert.

The Curriculum maps will give you a flavour of how we organise the curriculum at South Marston. We also follow the Swindon RE scheme of work and supplement it with resources from 'Festival Matters' which teaches the children about important aspects of the Christian calendar. Christian Values are also threaded through the curriculum. In computing we have recently adopted the Wessex scheme of work for Computing.

At South Marston spelling / phonics is taught through 'Read, Write, Inc' and the 'Letters and Sounds' scheme. We are expecting to replace 'Letters & Sounds' with 'Read Write Inc' throughout Foundation and KS1 by September 2017.

Phonics sessions are scheduled every day to help children learn, practise and use the phonics in their own work. These skills are then consolidated throughout KS2 with further spelling strategies provided, in line with the revised 2014 curriculum.

In KS2 we use the 'No Nonsense Spelling' scheme which is based on the new curriculum and statutory wordlists.

We have recently introduced the 'Read Write Inc' scheme in Foundation stage and expect to see the use of this throughout KS1 by September 2017. We also have a variety of Reading scheme books in school which are 'Book banded' using a common colour system. Childrne take these home. Schemes include; Oxford Reading Tree, Jolly learning, Rigby star, Usborne, Ginn reading 360
